The Rev. Dr. Stephen (Steve) A. Hayner, president emeritus of Columbia Theological Seminary, passed away today at the age of 66 surrounded by family and friends in the Columbia community. Known by many throughout the world with love, affection, and gratitude, Steve was a person of many honors and degrees who refused to categorize others or himself by achievements. His life was imbued with joy and freedom, which touched and changed many people along the way. Continue reading Steve Hayner, 66, Seminary President and Interdenominational Leader
At an event honoring Steve Hayner, a beautiful story was told by Steve’s former pastor Thomas Daniel ’03 about a special nativity set in the Hayners’ home. You may see the video of the full story below.
May God’s favor be with you
during this Advent and Christmas Season,
as we wait together with all of our hopes and fears.
May we affirm God’s Word with expectation
in our homes and daily lives,
for with God nothing is impossible.

and Professor of Christian Leadership Development
Supporters of Columbia Theological Seminary have sought a way to honor Steve Hayner and his many years of service in a tangible way. Given Steve’s commitments to cultural diversity, global outreach, instructional technology and relational leadership, a new Global Leadership Endowment was proposed. This endowment would build on the legacy of his presidency to attract leaders from all walks of life and to send them out into the world for renewed service to God and the Church.
The purpose of the Global Leadership Endowment is to foster initiatives for mutual enrichment and robust scholarship by engaging with leaders from diverse cultures empowering students for creative service in God’s changing world.
Decatur, GA—This morning the Board of Trustees for Columbia Theological Seminary met by conference call to elect an Interim President. With a strong recommendation from the search committee, the vote by the full Board was unanimous to appoint William E. Scheu, who currently serves as the outgoing Board Chair, to begin Wednesday, October 8 until the 10th President is elected. Rev. Dr. Tom Walker, pastor of the Palms Presbyterian Church, Jacksonville Beach, FL will serve as the incoming Board Chair.
Many were enthusiastic about the election of Mr. Scheu. “I couldn’t be more pleased that Bill will be serving in this role,” said Steve Hayner. “He has been Board Chair for seven years with both Laura Mendenhall and me. He is a longtime friend of the seminary, and has great working relationships with the Cabinet, as well as the staff and faculty. One of the great things about Bill is that these relationships are already in place, and he feels them genuinely.” Continue reading Columbia Seminary Board Appoints Interim President
